The Theory of Everything

The Theory of Everything is a movie that gives you a look into the life of Stephen Hawking. It is not an autobiography about him though. This movie instead shows the story of Stephen and how he met his wife Jane. The movie shows how the Hawkings were brought together and shows how their love story came to be.
The beginning of the movie starts at the University of Cambridge in 1963. There Stephen and Jane meet and soon fall in love. Throughout the first part of the movie you can see Stephen having a harder and harder time with moving and daily tasks, like picking up a pen. Stephen is soon diagnosed with Lou Gherigs disease. He is told he only has two years to live. He starts shutting out everyone, even Jane. Jane does not give up on Stephen though and she says that she is fully ready to endure what life throws at the both of them. They soon get married and start a family. This is when Stephens disease really starts to impact her. With the tasks of taking care of her husband and three children she starts becoming unhappy and depressed.
I think that this film shows that if you really love someone you will do anything for them, in sickness and in health. Jane really loves Stephen and sacrifices most of her life devoting to helping him.
I personally really loved this movie. It really moved me and brought out different feelings in me. At first I was sad about Stephens disease deteriorating throughout the movie, but watching him watch his children grow up and the relationship between him and Jane brought out happiness.
In one of my classes this year we actually did a case study on Lou Gherigs disease. We actually discussed how Stephen Hawking's case is much different than other cases. I was looking for the wobble walk he experienced, which is a huge symptom of the disease and I was also watching for the slow slurred speech. The actor who played Stephen, Eddie Redmayne, did an outstanding job playing his character. He really portrayed the disease quite accurately. He also has a very similar resemblance to Stephen Hawking. His acting really helped me get into the movie and made the whole movie more intriguing. Stephen Hawking has outlived the average prognosis of the disease which is absolutely incredible. Stephen is still living today and is now 74 years old. He was only supposed to live 2 years after he was diagnosed. The whole time he was battling his disease he discovered more theories and even managed to obtain his PHD in Physics. He really shows how the disease did not stop him from reaching his goals and dreams and that is really what I admire most about Stephen Hawking. Never give up, no matter what is going on in your life. There is always a way.

  1. I was always interested in watching this film. Knowing that it more about his relationship with is family and not his work really puts in perspective that there are multiple sides to one story.
